Bebaskan Anwar 901 Gathering

The decision by the Kuala Lumpur police to allow supporters of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to gather at a car park outside the Court Complex at Jalan Duta on 9/01/2012 (Monday) is a rational move. However,  Police have set 10 conditions for the organisers and participants of the gathering on Monday involving supporters of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after taking into consideration security and public order.

The other conditions are:

  • No public speeches
  • The organisers must ensure the participants refrain from acting disorderly or creating pandemonium that can disrupt the court proceedings.
  • The designated area is the public parking space to the left of the main road towards the courthouse. Participants are not allowed to stray outside the designated area.
  • In the event of overcrowding, the rest of the participants must disperse and leave the designated area.
  • The organisers must ensure the participants do not bring any weapon and cooperate with the authorities if a body search is necessary.
  • The organisers must ensure that all the participants disperse not later than one hour after the judgement is known.
  • The organisers and participants must abide by police orders from time to time to maintain peace during the gathering.
  • The organisers and participants are warned against committing mischief or destroying public property or any property in the vicinity.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the agreement was reached at a meeting with PKR deputy president, Azmin Ali, Friday.
Sentul district police chief ASP Zakaria Pagan in a statement said the conditions included banning pamphlets and banners with the tagline "Bebaskan Anwar 901" or "Bebaskan Anwar" during the gathering.

He said the use of loud speakers apart from a loud hailer would also not be permitted. However, two loud hailers would be allowed for controlling the participants.
